The wild ponies on Ocracoke island have been living in pens since Cape Hatteras became a National Seashore, and the government took over Ocracoke Island as a wildlife preserve The new status of national park allowed Ocracoke to remain wild and beautiful, and would offer some protection against the onslaught of condominiums and tourist accommodations ruining many east coast beaches. The National Park Service didn't want feral horses competing with the native wildlife the parks were established to protect, however. Cattle, pigs, sheep, and goats that roamed the island had already been mostly removed, and the government saw no reason why horses should be treated any differently. There are 180 acres which 18-23 horses live and protected from highway NC12 and overgrazing. These are true descendants from the spanish mustangs and are similar to the ones on Corolla and Shackleford.

My husband.got me back into photography, because I would go with him and help out on different photo shoots.
